Dis-abilities: a conversation about inclusive dance

As part of Brussels Day of Dance program (April, 28), “(Dis)abilities: a conversation about inclusive dance” intends to break down divisions and create synergies in the field of inclusive dance. An innovative intercultural dialogue between two avant-garde artists from Spain and Belgium will be conducted by Dr. Ignasi Guardans.

The event will be held in the Spanish Embassy and will be preceded by several artistic performances. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover what inclusive dance is: a movement that recognizes the first-person experience of disability, not as a medical model construct but as a social phenomenon through dance.

Guest artists, Ms. Marta Wörner and Mr. Jeroen Baeyens, are specialised in inclusive dance pedagogy and choreography, and will share their views and experiences on how disabled dance performers can contribute to dance.

In the last years, the inclusive dance movement has been increasingly recognised by a growing number of artistic and cultural institutions, as part of the cultural movement and out of the boundaries of the disability subculture. However, there’s still a long way to go before otherwise-abled individuals are not defined by their differences.

What does inclusive dance mean? Is this terminology inclusive enough? Disability in dance is simply another bodily possibility? These are some of the questions Marta and Jeroen will address in their conversation. They will also share teaching techniques and examples for inclusion in dance.
